The European Commission's Enterprise Directorate General, in collaboration with Euratex, held a one-day conference on 15 October 2002 in Brussels. The theme of the conference: The EU apparel business goes high-tech.
The objectives of the conference were to highlight the use of information technology in the European apparel business and to demonstrate the opportunities for the sector to increase competitive advantage by focusing on high value-added activities. It also showcased the results of a number of Commission-funded research projects.
The conference brought together an international group of 300 participants, including representatives from the Commission, Member States and Candidate Countries, the European trade associations, unions and textile research institutes, as well as individual enterprises from the textile and apparel sector. Commissioner Liikanen opened the event.
The conference speakers presented innovative technologies and processes for the apparel sector such as:
- Industrial made-to-measure and mass customization
- Multi-media applications for fashion retailers
- Online retailing and other e-commerce solutions for the sector
- 3D-bodyscanning and automatic body measurement
- On-screen visualisation of clothes and virtual try-ons
Bas Possen was invited as a key-note speaker at the conference. Directly after the opening speech of the EU-commissioner Mr. Liikanen he gave his presentation with the theme: "Mass Customization, present and future -
Fashion retail in the 21st century" and answered many questions by the audience. All in all this was a special event for the European fashion industry and Bas Possen was honoured to speak for such an international high-level group of industry leaders. All European major textile and fashion companies were represented by the top executives.
