Fitted in a Made-to-Measure suit

Elle
October 2002

by Sabine Geurten

Vintage used to be the magic word to look original, shortly a new one appeared: custom made. Because a tailor-made suit, cut to your body is really unique. With a bag full of money to London? Not necessary anymore, it’s also available over here.

If you thought you need the right label to be stylish? Mistake. Because of globalization (Think big flagship stores from top names in big cities) trendsetters have enough of the fact that their trendy outfit is available on every corner of the street. For people who rather die than wearing the same outfit on a party as their enemy is wearing globalization is a substantial problem. The solution? Made-to-Measure clothing. Off course Tailor made is not very new. The big difference is that in the year 2002 it’s not only available for merely wealthy people. Savile Row, the bespoke street of London is booming. The street used to be well-liked by English dignitaries, today tailoring is big with stars like Madonna, who for example had a Scottish skirt specially designed in Savile Row.

Supposing you have nothing with romantic fashion trends full of curlicues and drapes. And an Haute Couture suit of wild organza tailor made by one of our Dutch fashion designers is also not on the top of your list. Then there is the perfect alternative: Made-to-Measure clothing for man and woman. You can have it manufactured at WWW.POSSEN.COM; a company that focused for a longer time on the men’s marked and recently developed a woman’s department.

As an absolute man-suit-fetish I made, on behalf of ELLE, a reconnaissance. After years of walking past second-hand shops looking for the ideal men’s suit (to have the jacket fitted and to widen de trousers) I got my own unique made to measure suit. Exactly made after my personal preferences and measurements. The craftsmanship starts when you stand in your underwear in a dark room. A red leaser beam makes a three-dimensional scan of your body and in the computer every rounding is saved: your Digi-Twin has been born and the designing can start. Point of departure is the classical men’s suit, so within these codes (I know now what kissing buttons are) the variation is endless. The length of the jacket, the width of the trouser leg, what kind of revers, how many buttons, do you want slanted pockets or rather not, what kind of fabric, a striking lining or maybe a more distinct? Perfect for the woman who always wanted to be Coco Chanel… There are a lot of possibilities, but it’s advisable to consider what kind of suit you want exactly. Because to the question: "do you want or don’t want belt loops" I had to stay indebt. Addicted to the concept? To order a new suit surfing to www.possen.com en a few clicks with your mouse (to select fabric, color and snit) is enough. Only if you have not lost or gained a lot of weight compared with your digital twin sister. A custom made suit is available from EURO 650.-
