Made-To-Measure Suits over the Internet
Press Release, Nieuws Tribune
15 June 2000

We are all familiar with ordering ready-to-wear clothes over the Internet. Made-to-measure clothes are on the other hand more difficult to purchase. Possen.com has come up with a solution: scanning the body. For the time being this will only be possible in two locations in The Netherlands: Amsterdam and Nuth, the head quarters of Possen.com. Yet Possen has the intention to expand in the nearby future. In addition Possen.com wants to drive through the country with a truck in which people can take their measurements through a body scanner. Tailors will subsequently start working based upon someone's 'DigiTwin'. The people of whom is made a body scan in the truck or the store, choose a garment, the fabric and material on the spot. This can also be done over the Internet. If requested, a sample of the cloth can be delivered to the client before processing to the making of a suit. According to the initiators of Possen.com, the suit will be delivered within' four weeks. Possen is striving for a delivery within' two weeks. Gaining of time is the biggest advantage. The suit will also be "less expensive" than elsewhere, says Bas Possen, founder of Possen.com.Possen comes from a family of textile salesmen. Possen finances the initiative, but is indirectly supported by the German Government. The scanning equipment has been designed by a German manufacturer, which has been provided a subsidy by the German Government. Possen: "In their view, the product could be a method of getting the clothing industry from low-wage countries to Germany." Possen believes that the measurement and clothing preferences database and of his clients could also be interesting as for co-buying. "I can imagine that clients who prefer to wear Armani shirts will all place an order at Armani. I strongly believe in similar co-buying." The initiators are convinced that the made-to-measure market will grow and believe that Possen.com will be the one to profit from that. "Our research proves that the clothing market will exist of 18% made-to-measure clothing; and we are only talking business fashion here. At present that is only a small percentage in the Netherlands", according to Possen.
